My work
as a luthier
includes time spent on building violins, repairing and restoring
insruments in the violin family, and rehairing and repairing
bows. I
service instruments for local
musicians -- from Classical to Cajun -- and I build violins on
commission.
My
formal training
started at Indiana
University, where I completed their stringed
instrument technology (aka violin building) program. One major
perk of attending IU was the frequent exposure to very high quality
stringed instruments including the likes of Stradivari, Amati, and
Vuillaume. After IU, I
spent several months apprenticing with luthier Otis
Tomas of Cape
Breton, NS and also worked in the repair shop of the Music Emporium in
Arlington, MA. I have owned and operated my own business in south
Louisiana since 2002.
During
the past few
years I have continued my professional development by attending violin
making workshops and participating in an online violinmakers
forum. I'm also an avid musician and music lover, and surround
myself with great musicians, tunes, and gigs, which fully rounds out my
job as a luthier.
Because
I also play the
violin, I have an intimate knowledge of the nuances of how an
instrument feels and plays, how well it is set-up and how its sound can
be maximized. I play each instrument that I work on to make
sure it feels and sounds just right, and I also enjoy working with
customers to make sure each one ends up satisfied with the adjustment
of their instrument.
My workshop overlooks the beautiful Bayou Teche, between Arnaudville and Cecilia, LA. Come visit! Please call for directions (337-754-5545). I also have space to meet customers at the Acadiana Conservatory of Music building located in the Oil Center in Lafayette, LA. I'm usually there on Thursday afternoons, but please call me to make an appointment. |
